Fitness, Fun, and...Freedom?

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated
through you and into action, and because there is only one of you
in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, the world
will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is.
It is your business to keep the channel open.

--Martha Graham

When you walk into Girl on Fire Movement Studio, this wall is to your left.  You have to walk past it to get to the back room where you store your bag, shoes, coat, whatever, or to use the bathroom.

This wall is with you throughout all the classes, waiting to be noticed, sending out its meaning like incense into the air, wrapping itself around your dancing body.

This quote underlies the philosophy of the studio, the reason for its very existence.

There are no mirrors in this place but for one, small decorative mirror in which students moving cannot see themselves.

As your guide, I am your primary mirror and my reflective surface is nothing but kind and encouraging, telling you a truth about yourself that no mirror viewed with your own eyes probably ever has.

This quote guides not just the construction of the space but the way I develop and teach classes.

There is no point but the dancing, the moving.

There is no performance we are working toward.

There are no "right steps."

There is you, exploring YOU.

There is no count but the beat of your heart and the rhythm that is yours to find.

Regardless of what I teach, this will always be the goal: you finding you.

There is fitness to be found in this space, for sure.

There is fun to be had, no doubt.

But above all, we seek freedom.

I have no time for anything else and no one should settle for less.
